HPCSA Compliance for Locum Doctors
Everything You Need to Register as a Locum Doctor with NSSA
We make compliance straightforward. Our team guides you through every step, from document submission to your first shift.
Why Compliance Matters?
Nursing Services of South Africa (NSSA) operates under the highest standards of professional and ethical conduct. Every doctor we place is fully verified before being offered a single shift. This protects you, the patients you care for, and the facilities we supply.
All placements are governed by the Health Professions Act (No. 56 of 1974), the rules of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), and NSSA's internal compliance framework aligned to AHASA and CAPES standards.
Supporting Documents Required
Please have the following ready when you register to work with us. All documents must be current and valid.
Mandatory Documents
Additional Documents (where applicable)
Which HPCSA Registration Categories does NSSA Accept?
Independent Practice (MBChB or equivalent, fully registered)
Supervised Practice (community service or registrar level - please discuss with our compliance team)
Specialist registration (all HPCSA-recognised specialties)
Foreign Qualified Practitioners (registered with HPCSA under Section 24 or equivalent)
If you are unsure of your registration category or status, visit the HPCSA website, or contact our compliance team for guidance on WhatsApp 060 070 2436 or via Staffshift chat.
Professional Indemnity Insurance is Essential
All locum doctors registered with NSSA must hold their own current professional indemnity (PI) insurance before any placement can be made. This is a non-negotiable requirement.
Accepted providers include but are not limited to:
South African Medical Defence and Forensic (SAMDAF)
Medical Protection Society (MPS)
Medical Defence Union (MDU)
Centriq / Etana (specialist PI underwriters)
Your PI certificate must clearly state that it covers locum practice. If you are unsure whether your existing cover extends to locum work, contact your insurer before registering.
Our Verification Process
Once you have registered to work with us, and complete your profile in Staffshift by uploading your documents, our compliance team will:
Verify your HPCSA registration status directly with the HPCSA
Check all submitted documents for validity and certification
Confirm your PI insurance is current and appropriate
Contact your references
Invite you for an online interview
Typical turnaround: 3–5 working days for complete applications. Incomplete submissions will be returned with a checklist of outstanding items. Real-time updates are available in your Staffshift Compliance Passport; your digital record confirming you are cleared for placement.
Maintaining Your Compliance Status
Your compliance record must remain current at all times. NSSA will notify you in advance of upcoming renewals, but it is your responsibility to ensure the following are always up to date:
Annual HPCSA renewal (due 31 December each year)
Professional indemnity insurance renewal
BLS/ACLS recertification (typically every 2 years)
Any specialist or subspecialty certificates
Shifts cannot be allocated to any doctor whose compliance has lapsed. Renewals can be managed through the Staffshift app.
Foreign Qualified Doctors
If you qualified outside South Africa, you must hold a valid HPCSA registration before NSSA can place you. The HPCSA process for foreign qualified practitioners can take several months; we recommend starting this process early.
You will also need:
A South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluation of your foreign qualification
A valid work permit authorising you to practise medicine in South Africa
Proof of good standing from the medical council of your country of qualification
Our compliance team is experienced in supporting foreign qualified doctors through this process. Contact us for a confidential discussion.
HPCSA Compliance FAQs for Locum Doctors
Can I register before my HPCSA renewal is processed?
You can begin the registration process, but no placements will be made until your HPCSA registration is confirmed as current.
I have let my HPCSA registration lapse, can I still register?
You must reinstate your HPCSA registration before we can place you. Visit hpcsa.co.za for reinstatement guidance.
Do I need indemnity insurance if the facility has its own cover?
Yes. Facility cover typically protects the institution, not the individual practitioner. Your own PI insurance is a mandatory requirement regardless of the facility's policy.
How do I submit my documents?
Documents can be uploaded securely via our Staffshift registration portal or emailed to our compliance team at bookings@nurses.co.za. All documents are handled in accordance with POPIA.
What happens if my documents expire while I am on an active placement?
You will be notified in advance via your Staffshift Compliance Passport. If documents lapse without renewal, you will be stood down from shifts until compliance is restored. We work proactively to prevent this from happening.
